Queensland sunscreen and UV

How to think about sunscreen in South-East Queensland — amount, reapplication, UVA through glass, and why a clinic visit does not replace daily protection.

The split photograph on this page is the most honest picture we publish: sunscreen is invisible in ordinary light and obvious under ultraviolet. It is credited to Spigget on the credits page. It is not a testimonial.

Queensland’s UV year is long

ARPANSA’s maps do not take public holidays off. Incidental exposure — school drop-off, a cigarette break that is no longer a cigarette break, a ferry glare — adds up. Brisbane sun, humidity and skin ageing is the companion essay.

Amount beats brand poetry

A well-reviewed bottle used at half the test thickness is a weaker product than a plain one used generously. Rubbing it in until it vanishes is fine. Never applying it on the ears is not.

Reapplication is a climate problem

Sweat, swimming at South Bank, and towel-drying defeat films. Humidity does not waterproof you. Set a reminder that is less ambitious than perfection and more ambitious than “I put some on at breakfast”.

Glass is not a cape

UVA passes many windows. Drivers and office workers still collect one-sided photodamage. If your commute is the Centenary Motorway at 4pm, that is a sunscreen commute.

Sunscreen after procedures

Freshly treated skin often needs a bland, generous film and shade. Follow the clinic sheet. Background only: aftercare after a facial skin treatment.

Therapeutic claims and this site

Sunscreens in Australia are regulated therapeutic goods when they make sun protection claims. We talk about them as prevention tools. We do not say they will remove a wrinkle. That would be an outcome claim.

Everyday first

If you came here from a procedure search, do this page before you do considering a cosmetic facial treatment. The order is not an accident.

Questions readers ask

How much sunscreen does a face need?

Public-health guidance often uses about a teaspoon for face and neck as a teaching amount. Most people use less. If you can see obvious streaks and then rub them in, you are closer than a mist of leftover holiday bottle.

Does a high SPF mean I can stay out longer?

SPF is tested at a set thickness and mainly describes UVB. It is not a licence to skip shade and clothing. Queensland still burns people who trusted a number.

Is the UV photograph on this page a before-and-after of a treatment?

No. It is a Creative Commons demonstration of sunscreen absorbing ultraviolet light on one side of a face. It is not a clinic result.

Can I use last summer’s bottle?

Check the expiry and how it was stored. A glovebox in February is a hostile environment. When in doubt, replace it.
