Collagen, elastin and the skin barrier
What collagen, elastin and the stratum corneum actually do, how Queensland weather stresses them, and which claims on a moisturiser label outrun the evidence.

Collagen and elastin are the dermal proteins people name when they want a younger-sounding sentence. The barrier is the unglamorous surface that decides whether your face stings after a swim at Streets Beach. They are different systems. Mixing them up is how brochures get written.
Collagen is scaffolding, not icing
Type I and III collagen fibres give dermis tensile strength. Fibroblasts make them. Ultraviolet light, glycation and time alter the fibres and the cells that maintain them. That is structure, not a topping you spread at night.
The diagram on this page is anatomy, credited on the credits page. It is not a before-and-after.
Elastin is the recoil
Elastin lets skin snap back after a pinch. Photodamage produces solar elastosis — a messy, less functional stand-in. A histology image of that change is also credited on this site. Seeing it should lower your patience for any bottle that says “elastic youth”.
More on light: Brisbane sun, humidity and skin ageing.
The barrier is lipids and bricks
The stratum corneum is a brick-and-mortar wall. Detergent, over-exfoliation, air-conditioning and a week of festival sunscreen can strip the mortar. Lines look worse when the wall is dry. That is not the same as growing new dermal collagen.
If your face is tight in a Brisbane summer, start with dry skin and barrier repair in a subtropical climate rather than a procedure search.
What labels can honestly say
A moisturiser can reduce transepidermal water loss while you use it. A sunscreen can reduce additional UV injury if you apply enough. A retinoid can change how epidermis turns over; some prescription retinoids have dermatology evidence for photodamage and must be discussed with a pharmacist or practitioner.
A label cannot honestly promise a particular wrinkle map. We unpack the shelf category in retinoids and over-the-counter anti-ageing skincare.
Clinic treatments sit on top of this biology
Peels and microdermabrasion act on the surface first. Consultations about prescription medicines sit in another legal category. Do not let one brochure collapse them. Use clinic skin treatments and consultations as separate doors.

Questions readers ask
Does drinking collagen rebuild facial collagen?
Oral collagen supplements are a crowded market. Human evidence for a specific change in facial wrinkles is limited and mixed. Food protein, sun protection and not smoking have a clearer mechanistic story. Treat supplement ads as ads.
What is the skin barrier in one sentence?
It is the outer system — lipids, corneocytes and pH — that keeps water in and irritants out. When it is disrupted, skin stings, flakes and looks lined even if the dermis has not suddenly aged a decade.
Can a peel “replace collagen”?
A peel removes or accelerates shedding of outer layers. Any later remodelling is individual, delayed and not guaranteed. Suitability and downtime belong in a consultation, not in a caption. See our chemical peel guide.
Why show medical diagrams instead of smiling faces?
Diagrams teach anatomy without implying an outcome. Smiling clinic photographs often function as testimonials, which we do not publish.
